In one of the northernmost cities in the Netherlands there is plenty to see during a walk. It is the perfect city for a long weekend away. When walking in Groningen city, keep in mind that the cozy and lively atmosphere of this student city might keep you from walking here and there.. You can of course take a break with a beer on the terrace. There is plenty to see, and walking through this city is an experience in itself because of the atmosphere!

Dive into the green while walking in Groningen city

The City Park is located on the edge of this beautiful city. This is the park where you can go to look for nature. Several hiking trails have been laid out in the forest. Several species of animals can also be found among the trees. For example, see if you can spot the Scottish Highlanders and goats! Can’t get enough of the animals? Then there is a petting zoo with even more animals, which is part of the nature and sustainability education program Groningen. At Nature Paviljoen ‘t Groene Hart you can also shelter from the rain with a drink or sit outside on the terrace when the weather is good.

A bustling park – really worth a stroll in Groningen city – is the Noorderplantsoen. In spring and summer (actually as soon as the sun shines through the clouds) you will find the lawns covered with people and their rugs. Students and townspeople like to visit this park to enjoy the weather, which makes for a lively atmosphere. With warm weather, various BBQs and picnics are held on the grass, while enjoying a warm drink. Even with cold weather, the City Park is full of fun. You will see many people walking around with steaming cups of coffee or tea. Chances are they picked it up at Sunday ‘s take-away bar. On the terrace of this tent you can enjoy people-watching with a blanket between your walks, or encourage one of the sports enthusiasts who runs past.

Exploring over the vowels Grunn

There are several historic buildings on the Grote Markt. See the Martini Tower or climb the 261 steps to look out over the city. You will also find the old Gold Office and City Hall here. A stroll through the Oude Kijk in Het Jatstraat is also recommended. In this street you will find a whole collection of coffee and lunch places, many of which offer vegan, vegetarian and organic food and drinks! The same applies to the Oude Boteringestraat, which can be found a little further away.

Do you want a break from walking through Groningen city? Rain or shine, the Poeleplein is the place to grab a terrace! Although you will find the well-known Drie Gezusters on the Grote Markt, the atmosphere of this square is unlike any other in the city. From the Poeleplein it is only a few meters walk before you reach the canals. By following the canals you can stroll through another part of the city. You will come across ‘t Pannekoekschip and if you walk a little further you can also admire the Stadsschouwburg.

The Netherlands has several national parks that are definitely worth a visit. What better way to road trip along these nature reserves than with an (electric) camper? This is an adventurous way to get out and about and experience Dutch nature from your own house on wheels. Enjoy camping and be close to nature, but still with the comfort of sleeping inside dry. Another advantage of going out with a road trip camper is that camper places where you stay for a short time are often much cheaper than places on campsites themselves.

With the camper on a road trip between the woods and on the heath

Drenthe is the least populated province of the Netherlands. Partly because of this, there is a lot of countryside and the province has been able to retain its rural character. The Dwingelderveld National Park is located in Drenthe. This is an ideal place for a stopover with a road trip camper thanks to the many (small) campsites that can be found here, surrounded by nature. As you can see in the picture, this is really fun! You can walk here from your campervan in the woods and over the heath landscape. Along the way you can rest at one of the tea houses and restaurants that are hidden between the woods. For example, go and taste special beers from the wide range of De Bospub .

Another park that is definitely worth a visit if you like heath and forest is the Sallandse Heuvelrug. There are several (nature) campsites around the nature reserve, where you can spend the night in an adventurous and wooded way with the road trip camper. In this area you get close to nature and you can immerse yourself in the sounds that come with the outdoors. In addition, there are beautiful views that you can discover while taking one of the many hiking trails.

Tour along the coast and between the dunes

Are you someone who can really enjoy the salty wind through your hair while you are among the dune landscapes? The Oranjezon nature reserve in Zeeland offers you encounters with wildlife as well as sand between your toes on the nearby beach. You can also visit campsites in the area during your road trip with a camper. Leave your mobile home for a while and observe the wild horses, herons, deer and roe deer that have made their home here. Do you dare to take a dip in the sea, or would you rather have a picnic on the beach? You can do whatever you want with the campsites within walking distance of the beach!

Another National Park located on the beach is Zuid-Kennemerland, next to Haarlem. If you’re lucky, you might spot the European bison here! Do you want to do something in a different kind of ecosystem in addition to getting a breath of fresh air on the coast of the North Sea? You can then roll up your sleeves and help with the Landje van De Boer , where the principles of natural gardening are pursued. Natural cycles and low-waste are put into practice as much as possible. Who knows, you might find the ingredients for your dinner in this ecological picking and testing garden, which you can prepare in your own road trip camper!
