Have you ever experienced having limited access to healthcare? Worried about your ability to easily use public transport? Struggled balancing a career and childcare? Been treated as an outsider to the culture you live in? This game will get you there.

Let’s Play Equal is a light-hearted yet powerful board game designed to break taboos and ignite meaningful conversations about diversity and inclusion. It challenges you to reflect on what you know, think, and feel about yourself and others. By stepping into someone else’s shoes, you’ll experience firsthand how privilege—or the lack of it—affects life’s opportunities. Become aware of what you (don’t) know, think, and feel about yourself and others.

Let’s see how (un)fair life is

The differences that shape us can be beautiful, but they can also create barriers. Not everyone starts life on equal footing. Some face obstacles because of their ethnicity, disability, religion, or other aspects of their identity. And not everyone is so lucky to have a supportive family, friends, or a boss, and that everyone can be anyone. You will never know about the struggles of others, about their thoughts and feelings, until you ask and try to understand. They will never know about yours until you open up and speak up. As it is said in relationships, communication is key. Let’s take this key in our daily life and use it.

Let’s play, talk, and empathise

The social board game Let’s Play Equal is facilitating a safe and creative space to talk about life’s struggles and think about how we would react if we were in someone’s shoes when a life event occurred. How would you deal with first love in Sander’s shoes? How is Coco dealing with expectations of society after transitioning to be a woman? A normal day for us can feel like a struggle for Marja, who has a paralysed arm, don’t you think so?

These personas provide your team—up to 8 people—with a safe space to reflect on justice, (in)equality, diversity, and inclusiveness. Let’s break taboos and make eye-opening insights that can change lives. With a lot of self-reflection in oneself, as a team you can solve life struggles in creative and empathic ways. Nothing is controversial here. It is life and its situations.

Let’s Play Equal

Imagine a world where freedom of speech is really free, where everyone has the same opportunities, and differences are only making us glow. With the learning experience of “Let’s Play Equal”, you and your company can be one step closer to that world. By using the most unfair game in the world for a fair future for all.

Wonderful hours of rollerblading in Amersfoort and surroundings, that’s possible! Amersfoort is equipped with a rollerblader route along the Eem all the way to our gypsy wagon in which you can spend the night in Bunschoten-Spakenburg. Rollerblading is also a very active way to explore this area just between and bike and walk pace. This way you do not take too long, but you do have the space to enjoy the environment without flying by. Would you like that? Time to get your skates out of the closet again, Sustainaway has picked the best route for you!

The inline skating route

During this route you skate on a nice road all the way from Bunschoten-Spakenburg to Amersfoort. This skating route is about 30 km long but you can also shorten or make it longer if you want and add a round of Amersfoort to it. There you can also have a delicious lunch before you go back.

In the vicinity of Bunschoten-Spakenburg there is a lot of nature with many forests, meadows and water but also history with museums and cozy terraces to complete a wonderful day of skating.

If you choose to go into the center of Amersfoort, you may want to take a look at Binicafe. This is a delicious organic and vegan restaurant that is committed to a sustainable and healthy lifestyle. At Sla En Meer you can also eat tasty and healthy food. You will find on their menu mainly fresh salads and juices. On a kiss to a lunch place? Blur Your Life offers you a choice between the tastiest things, whether it’s a cup of coffee from locally roasted coffee beans, a vegan piece of cake or a soup of seasonal products.

What do I need for this skate route?

Of course, you need a good pair of skates. They have to be the right size and comfortable, because you are going to make a big trip with them. If you are still planning to do things during the skating route, it may also be useful to bring normal shoes so that you can change them. Furthermore, we advise you to have suitable clothes, both comfortable clothing and something against the rain (because yes, in the Netherlands there can sometimes be a shower …). Having a backpack is handy, then you always have water with you and you can take something to snack on with you.

For beginners, a first aid kit is recommended. Sometimes you go a bit harder than intended and an accident is then in a small corner. If you do not often skate long distances, blister plasters are also a must! For your safety, wearing good protection is important. Therefore, make sure you have a good inline helmet and a protective set for wrists, elbows and knees.

Sleeping somewhere?

The route is easily accessible via the farm where there are a number of cute gypsy wagons. Spend the night in the middle of nature to relax after such a day of rollerblading. Make your day truly unique and experience life on the farm. Are you going out with the family? Then this gypsy wagon for 4 people or this gypsy wagon with box bed is ideal! On an adventure as a couple? Then you have the choice of this spacious gypsy wagon with seating area or a small cozy gypsy wagon.

Does this inline skating route seem like a fun activity for this summer? Do not hesitate long, book your gypsy wagon in Bunschoten-Spakenburg and put on your skates!

Want to watch something that has an impact while relaxing on the couch – a documentary that really makes you think? Then choose one of these five Netflix documentaries about sustainability. We guarantee that after watching these documentaries you will have new insights and a whole arsenal of new facts!

The documentaries in our top 5 are about eating patterns and how they affect the climate, but there are also documentaries that focus more on nature and how you see nature changing more and more.

Our top 5 favorite Netflix documentaries about sustainability

1. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret

Cowspiracy is a classic documentary about the impact of eating meat on the environment. Renowned environmentalists Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn explore the solution to a major problem: climate change in a fun and funny way.

What is special about the documentary is that it was made with the help of a crowdfunding campaign. A total of $115,000 was raised, more than twice the original goal. This made it possible to release the film in different languages, otherwise it might not have been such a success.

2. Seaspiracy

Seaspiracy is in line with the previous documentary, only here the focus is on fishing and what role it plays in climate problems. The documentary shows the impact of overfishing on the oceans and the climate, and also shows how the large amount of marine waste, for example from fishing nets, causes even more pollution. British Ali Tabrizi is the director and protagonist of the film. Kip Andersen (one of the makers of Cowspiracy) also contributed to the documentary.

The film was criticized by the fishing industry and by some scientists because some of the information was incorrect. The film was praised by environmental activists because it accurately reflects the consequences of overfishing.

3. David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet

David Attenborough may have one of the most recognizable voices in the world, and what a joy it is to listen to him! The biologist is now 95 years old and has devoted his entire life to nature. He is best known for the BBC’s award-winning documentaries, for which he provided the voice-over.

The film takes you into the life of this special man. It shows how he started working for the BBC in 1950. During his work he could then see many different ecosystems. A lot has changed during his life and he has seen it. In the documentary, he tells in his own way what the future will look like if we don’t change our behavior and habits.

4. Our Planet

The Netflix series Our Planet shows you the most beautiful places in the world in a unique way. Not only do you see surprising new places, the documentary also introduces you to animals that you have never seen before. In the eight episodes, the documentary maker takes you to the sea, the forests, the desert and the jungle.

It is recommended to also view Behind The Scenes – Our Planet. In this episode you can see for yourself how the images were shot and why they give you a unique insight into the animal world. In this way you also learn how special the images that appear in the documentary are.

5. The Game Changers

The documentary “The Game Changers” takes a closer look at the vegan diet. Based on scientific information and with the help of interviews with top athletes, this documentary tells about the rise of veganism. For example, Lewis Hammilton, the famous Formula 1 driver, various American football players and former bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger talk about their diet choices and lifestyle.

The last week of December 2021 has arrived. During New Year’s Eve many oliebollen are baked. Are you going to bake oliebollen yourself this year? Then make vegan oliebollen! These are not only very tasty and easy to prepare, but also better for the environment. The preparation of the vegan oliebollen takes 30/45 minutes. After that, this delicacy has to rise for about an hour. Lots of fun!

History

Every year around New Year’s Eve, oliebollen are eaten en masse throughout the country. Oliebollen are a typical delicacy for the winter. The reason for this is that oliebollen are potent, served warm and high in calories. During the winter period there used to be scarcity and cold.

Where did the idea of this delicacy come from? In the late Middle Ages, the poor used to visit other people to wish them a happy new year. In return they received a kind of treat, namely the oil cake. This oil cake did not yet have the round shape as we know it. These cakes were flat in the Middle Ages. Over the years, this has developed into the oliebol. How do you make the tastiest vegan oliebollen? We have the tastiest recipe for vegan oliebollen for you!

Ingredients

100 to 150 grams of raisins

250 ml lukewarm water

500 ml almond drink natural (or 500 ml soy milk)

14 grams dried yeast

2 tbsp granulated sugar or coconut blossom sugar

500 grams wheat flour

1 tsp salt

2 liters of peanut oil

Powdered sugar

Preparation method: How do you make the vegan oliebollen?

Preparation time: 30/45 min. (+1 hour to let the batter rise)

To make vegan oliebollen, first place the raisins in a bowl. Pour the lukewarm water over this. You can drain these when the water has cooled down. Meanwhile, you can mix the sifted flour, dried yeast, sugar and salt. Then make a well and pour in the almond drink or soy milk. Mix it all to a smooth batter. Finally add the raisins and mix well again. Dampen a tea towel with warm water and cover the mix. Then put it in a warm place and wait at least an hour for the dough to rise.

Then heat the oil in a pan (180 degrees) or deep fryer. Make balls with 2 spoons or an ice cream scoop and bake for about 8 minutes until golden brown. Once ready, you can remove the vegan oliebollen and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Lets eat!

Do you want to store your vegan oliebollen? Let them cool down first and then store them airtight. You can keep the oliebollen in the fridge for about two days. Do you want to keep this vegan delicacy longer? It is also possible to freeze them. Let the vegan oliebollen cool down again and put them in the freezer. We recommend that you take the oliebol out of the freezer within three months!

Sustainaway - Your sustainable getaway

Are you bored in the winter? Then go and photograph frozen soap bubbles! We often see people blowing bubbles in the summer while this can be even more fun in the winter! In winter, the bubbles can freeze, causing small ice crystals to form in the bubbles. These give a beautiful effect so that you can make the most beautiful creations with them. With this activity it remains fun to go outside in the winter. In this blog you can read the best tips for photographing frozen soap bubbles.

Necessities

washing up liquid

Water

Optional: glycerin (for a firmer bell)

Bubble blower/straw (or something else to blow bubbles with)

Camera (or phone)

Photographing frozen soap bubbles: how do you do that?

Do you want to photograph frozen soap bubbles, but you don’t know how? Below we explain exactly how to do it!

First of all, you start by making a mix. You can do this very easily by mixing 1 part dish soap and 3 to 4 parts warm water in a bowl. This should already be able to make frozen soap bubbles. If you’d like to make some firmer bubbles, you could add glycerin to the mix. When the mix is ready, you can go outside to blow your bubbles. Note that it must be freezing outside because otherwise the bubbles cannot freeze. For example, get out of bed early, this is the coldest time of the day. At this time it is also perfect to play with the sunrise!

To photograph frozen soap bubbles, it is important that you are in a sheltered spot. The wind can cause the bell to break quickly. It is also important that you blow the bubble on a cold surface such as snow, a cold pole or branch. The warm water causes the bubble to freeze faster. So have your camera ready! You can take the photos with your phone, but if you would like a high-quality photo, you can also use an SLR camera, for example. All ready? Then blow the first bubbles and experiment with the light and location. You may not be able to blow the bubbles or photograph the bubbles in one go, but practice makes perfect!

Other tips / Mpemba effect

Another fun activity you can try in the winter is playing with the Mpemba effect . This name refers to the phenomenon whereby warmer water freezes faster than colder water under some conditions. You can do fun experiments with this! If it freezes well, take a glass of hot water or use your sustainable water bottle and throw the contents into the air outside. The water should freeze almost immediately, which gives a beautiful effect in photos! Make sure that you don’t get it in the air and then it falls on you. It won’t work if it’s not cold enough. And wet clothes in the winter is of course not very nice..

Going on vacation is wonderful. Whether you go for a walk through the forests in Eastern Europe, or discover our own country: you always run into the same problems, because where do you eat? What should I bring? Fortunately, in 2021 we have a smartphone that makes life (partly) a lot easier. This way you can focus on relaxing and dreaming away during your holiday! Wherever you go, these handy travel apps travel with you and they’re smarter than ever!

The best travel app(s) for in your pocket!

1. Happy Cow

Finding a good, tasty place to eat can be quite difficult, let alone if you are a vegan, vegetarian or lactose- and gluten-free. Where should you go then? With the travel app HappyCow you will not run into these kinds of problems. You just need to enter your location and tick your diet preferences. Based on this, the app provides restaurants, cafes, B&B and even vegan clothing stores where you can go for everything you might need on the go. The travel app is especially useful for finding restaurants.

Since the launch of HappyCow in 1999, the platform has grown at a rapid pace. Especially in the last few years, it has become more and more popular, as more and more people choose to eat more consciously. There are currently 50,000 restaurants and cafes in 175 countries on the app.

2. Fair Trip

Looking for a unique travel experience? The FairTrip travel app helps you on your way. By using the app, you can find places that are trying to make a positive impact on the environment and the local economy.

On the map in the app you can choose one of the 3,000 places you would like to go to, each place special in its own way. On the app you will find restaurants, bars, experiences, hotels and much more.

3. NS international

Do you also suffer from flight shame ? Or would you rather take a city trip by train? Then the NS-International app is the ideal app for travelling. You travel by train with very low CO2 emissions, can sit comfortably and you arrive in the middle of the city!

Have you ever heard of the NS interrail tickets? An interrail ticket is a roaming card with which you can travel through Europe carefree. You pay a fixed amount. This way you know exactly how much you have lost in advance! There are two variants for sale:

The Interrail Global Pass: allows you to travel across multiple countries in Europe

The Interrail One Country Pass: suitable for travel through one country in Europe.

The interrail tickets are only for sale to people living in Europe.

4. PackPoint

Are you always afraid that you will forget something? With the handy app from PackPoint, you don’t have to worry about this anymore. How does it work? You enter your destination, how long you will stay there, what you are going to do and voila! The travel app presents a packing list based on the weather and the information you entered previously.

5. Forest

The phone is of course a necessity for the holidays, especially now that you have all these handy travel apps installed. It can also, from personal experience, be wonderful to put the phone down for a while and completely relax while reading a book. With the Forest app, you get points and plant virtual trees by putting your phone away for more than half an hour. Disconnect from online life for a while and focus on all the beauty that can be seen in the place you are in!

Sustainaway - Your sustainable getaway

The Christmas dinner is perhaps the best dinner of the year, and not to forget: the tastiest. Christmas is often accompanied by just a little too much food, and that throughout the day. Do you still have room in your stomach for a vegan Christmas dessert? Then end the evening with this mocca mouse, simple and delicious!

Vegan Christmas dessert – Mocca mouse

Our favorite vegan Christmas dessert recipe is the mocca mouse. This recipe is gluten free and vegan. The mocca mouse is a dessert made of coffee, chocolate and hazelnuts. Note: This recipe contains caffeine. So do you want to have an after-dinner nap immediately after dessert? Then this recipe is less suitable.

This vegan Christmas dessert from Puur Suzanne is easy and quick to make. Start preparing this dessert on time, as it needs to set in the fridge for about 4 hours!

What do you need?

The list of ingredients below is based on a mocca mouse for 4 people. Are you going to make this vegan Christmas dessert for more or fewer people? Adjust your quantities accordingly.

The ingredients

200 milliliters soy cream or another type of cream

2 tablespoons of coconut blossom sugar

1 cup of espresso or strong coffee*

1 teaspoon agar agar – this ingredient is available at health food stores

50 grams of dark chocolate

50 grams of hazelnuts

*you can replace the coffee with decaffeinated coffee. Note that this recipe is made on the coffee with caffeine. So it is possible that when you use decaffeinated coffee, the taste may be different.

How do you make this vegan Christmas dessert?

Step 1: Whip the soy cream, or another type of cream, until it is firm.

Step 2: Chop the dark chocolate and hazelnuts into small pieces.

Step 3: Brew a strong cup of (decaffeinated) coffee. Dissolve the coconut sugar and agar agar in this. Bring the coffee to the boil in a small saucepan along with the ingredients you’ve added.

Step 4: Turn off the heat source. Keep stirring in the small pan. Allow the coffee to cool until it is lukewarm.

Step 5: You can now add the coffee from step 4 to the whipped cream from step 1. Add the chopped hazelnuts and dark chocolate. You can now divide the mocca mouse over the four glasses. Don’t forget to let the glasses with mousse set in the fridge for about 4 hours.

The nice thing about making your own mocca mouse is that you can, for example, stir chocolate chip cookies or stroopwafels through the mouse. Or decorate your mocca mouse with, for example, coffee beans.

The last month of the year 2021 has arrived. On December 25 and 26, most people celebrate Christmas again with friends and/or family. Have you not yet gained inspiration for what to eat during the holidays? In this blog you can read one of our favorite vegetarian Christmas recipes: a vegan appetizer for Christmas!

What is vegetarian food?

You hear more and more often that someone has become vegetarian or eats part vegetarian. In the Netherlands there are 800,000 vegetarians and more than 4 million people who consciously opt for a meal without meat a few times a week.

But what does it mean when you eat vegetarian? Vegetarians consciously do not eat meat, fish or poultry. There can be various reasons for this, such as animal welfare or because not eating meat is better for the environment. Meat production is responsible for about 40 percent of the greenhouse gases released by the production of food. On average, 1 kilo of meat equals 5 kilos of climate.

A vegan appetizer for Christmas: pumpkin soup

The ingredients

Are you looking for a vegan Christmas recipe for your starter? Try this Thai pumpkin soup from the Vegan Effect. This dish is easy to make, especially if you are cooking for several people. In addition, the dish is vegan and budget-proof!

What do you need for a large pan of vegetarian Thai pumpkin soup?

1.5 kilos of pumpkin

400 ml coconut milk

500 ml for vegetable stock

Onion, 1 red onion and 2 shallots

2 cloves of garlic

Small piece of ginger

Red pepper

1 tablespoon coconut oil

Lime

1 stalk lemongrass

Optional: pepper that you can add to taste

Want to decorate the pumpkin soup with toppings? You can use coriander, chopped peanuts and/or spring onions for this.

The method

Step 1 : Carve your pumpkin. You don’t have to take the skin off. Is cutting difficult? Warm the pumpkin in a preheated oven at 220 degrees for about 12-15 minutes.

Step 2 : Chop the (red) onion, red pepper, lemongrass, ginger and press the 2 cloves of garlic. Heat a large stockpot with 400 ml coconut milk. Add the chopped ingredients and let it fry for a few minutes.

Step 3 : Boil some water and add the vegetable stock. Add the diced pumpkin and coconut milk to the cooked vegetable stock and let it boil for about 15 minutes. After fifteen minutes, see if you can pierce the pumpkin with your fork. Does this work? Then the pumpkin is cooked.

Step 4 : Now it’s time to puree your pumpkin soup until creamy. Don’t forget to take out the lemongrass. Squeeze your lime into the soup and stir well. You can optionally add pepper and different toppings.

Do you have leftover pumpkin soup? Let the soup cool at room temperature. It is easiest to divide the soup into small portions among the freezer containers. Stick your label with the date and ingredients on the packaging. You can store the pumpkin soup at -18 degrees or colder for up to 3 months.

Want to prepare the frozen pumpkin soup? This can be done by heating a pan over a low heat. Put a lid on the pan and stir the ‘block’ of soup regularly. This will prevent your soup from getting burnt.

During the holiday period, many Dutch people exchange their home for a holiday address for a few days or weeks. Are you going on vacation? It is important to leave your house safe during your holiday. In this blog we give you a number of tips to arrange this as well as possible with a few simple actions.

Checklist: leave your home safe during vacation

1. Turn off devices

Before you travel, turn off all devices, including those that you normally leave on standby, such as your TV or laptop. If you leave plugs in the socket, this ensures that there is still so-called standby consumption. With standby consumption, the power leaks from your socket, as it were. So always pull the plugs out of the socket. This way you prevent unexpectedly high costs and the waste of electricity.

Also don’t forget the WIFI modem. This is because it consumes the same amount of electricity, regardless of use. Don’t have an induction plate yet and do you cook on gas? Turn off the gas tap for safety.

2. Fridge and freezer

Two large consumers are located in the kitchen: the refrigerator and the freezer. Before you go on holiday, empty the fridge and freezer and defrost the freezer regularly. It is recommended that you do this at least once a year, even if you don’t happen to be going on holiday. An ice layer in the freezer ensures that you have less storage space. In addition, defrosting also saves energy. Did you know that with two millimeters of ice on the inside, ten percent more energy is used ?

Are you going on holiday for a short period of time? Then put the refrigerator in holiday mode. This position can be found near the on/off switch. Are you going on holiday for a longer period of time? Then it is better to turn off the refrigerator completely and pull the plug. Clean the appliances and leave the door slightly open. This way you prevent mold and your fridge can’t use energy when you’re away.

3. Bulbs

Turning off lights seems simple, but is often forgotten. It is of course advisable to leave a number of lights on, possibly with a timer. This is especially important in dark places around and inside the home. This makes it less attractive for burglars to enter. Use an energy-saving or LED lamp to save as much energy as possible.

4. Heating

Heating the house when you are on vacation is not necessary. Are you going on holiday in the winter? Then it is best to set the heating as low as possible. When the heating is completely switched off in the winter months, it can happen that the pipes freeze to pieces.

When the broken pipes thaw, the water starts flowing again. This can cause water damage. Do you not have running water when you return from vacation? Always check with the neighbors whether they also have no water. When they do have water, you know your pipes are frozen. The best thing you can do is contact a plumber.

Safe from home, rest assured on the road!

There is nothing better than going to your holiday destination with peace of mind. Getting a message from the neighbors that there has been a break-in would be very annoying. Leaving your house safe during your holiday is therefore important to be able to enjoy your holiday address to the fullest. Prevention is better than cure.

Inform your neighbors or roommates how long you will be away. In this way they can keep an eye on things, keep track of the post if necessary and call the police in case of suspicious situations. This way you can safely leave your house during your (sustainable) holiday .

6 extra tips for a burglary-free holiday

Tip 1: Check everything in and around your house whether your windows are closed and your doors are locked.

Tip 2: Do not close your window curtains. That way, burglars won’t notice that you’re not at home.

Tip 3: Ask someone to do your mail. For example, there is no pile of mail by the door, making it less noticeable to the burglars that you are not at home.

Tip 4: Pass on your holiday address to someone you know so that you can quickly contact each other in the event of an emergency.

Tip 5: Opportunity makes the thief. Therefore, do not put your valuables such as your tablet, laptop and jewelry out of sight.

Tip 6: Don’t post on social media about your vacation. Do you want to post something about your holiday? Change your settings from public to friends only or post your photos later when you get back home.
