Germany in numbers

Germany is the country with the highest population in the European Union; more than 83 million people live there. The country has about 357,121 km² in area, of which more than two percent consists of rivers, canals and lakes. Did you know that the German Autobahn has a total length of approximately 13,000 kilometers? This makes the Autobahn one of the largest in the world!

The many countries with which Germany borders are special. There are no fewer than 9 of them: Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition, the country is bordered by two seas: the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. This makes a weekend away in Germany ideal as a stopover or to spend your holiday!

Traditions in Germany

Every country has its own culture and has its own customs and dishes. Beer and schnitzels are just as popular in Germany as pizza is in Italy. A lot of sausage is also eaten in Germany, including the classic: the currywurst. Germans eat traditionally and do not shy away from a bite more or less.

Besides the traditional dishes, Germany is also known for the so-called “pünktlichkeit”. If you meet a German for a certain time, it is normal to be well on time. The rule is that you are present five minutes in advance. This is also expected the other way around. Finally, it is a tradition in Germany to see Sunday as a day of rest. It is becoming less and less strict, but not working on the Day of the Lord is quite normal. In many cities you see that most shops are closed for that reason.

Northern Germany & Southern Germany

Holiday Northern Germany

During a holiday in Northern Germany you have a wide choice of cities to visit. You will not only find the capital Berlin, but also other popular cities such as Bremen, Hanover and Hamburg. In the cities you will find a lot about the history of Germany, but you can also go shopping, view old buildings or pop into cafes. In these large cities you experience modern Germany. Both Berlin and Hamburg are known for their alternative scenes. In both cities you will find many vegan restaurants, large squatters’ movements and a distinct underground scene.

A day at the beach during your holiday in Northern Germany

Would you rather not imagine yourself in the cities during your Northern Germany holiday? Then you will find large strips of beach in Northern Germany. Like the Netherlands, the country borders on the North Sea. For example, pay a visit to the most northern island during your Germany weekend away: ‘Queen of the North Sea’, also known as the beaches of Sylt called. Here you will find almost 40 km of sandy beaches and is ideal for families with children. Half of Sylt consists of a protected nature reserve. Perpendicular to the beach you will find the green part of the island. Ideal for a nice walk in nature!

Holiday Southern Germany

Are you going on holiday in Southern Germany? The federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are the federal states that fall under this. These locations have everything for a nice weekend away in Germany. The landscape has different faces, many sustainable activities are needed and there are plenty of places to visit. When you think of Bavaria, images of huge beer glasses, dirndl dresses and lederhosen come to mind. Southern Germany is known for this, but has much more to offer than this.

Visit the capital of the German state of Beiren, Munich. In addition to the popular Oktoberfest in September, a visit to this city in the other months is also worthwhile. During the winter months, there is often snow. In the spring you can enjoy the 375 hectare park, the Englischer Garten.

Destination tips during your holiday in Southern Germany

Looking for hiking tips? Visit the Black Forest: a beautiful densely wooded landscape. Here you will find green meadows and several waterfalls, gorges and rivers. Part of the Black Forest has been a national park since 2014. Highly recommended during your Germany weekend away! Would you like to explore the water during your holiday in Southern Germany? Lake Constance is 536 km² and can be found in addition to Germany, also in Switzerland and Austria. Take part in water sports here or relax during a nice walking or cycling trip. In short, there is plenty to do during your Germany weekend away!

Weather & Climate in Germany

Are you going away on a weekend in Germany and are you curious about the weather? Like the Netherlands, Germany has a moderate maritime climate. This means that you can expect relatively mild winters and no extreme temperatures in the summer. In Germany the weather is only less influenced by the sea. As a result, there can be significant differences during the unpredictable winter months. Also in summer there is more chance of tropical weather or a heat wave. A week-long quail summer cannot be ruled out either. There is then a lot of precipitation, few hours of sunshine and low temperatures.

In the months of January and February, the average temperature is between -4 and 2 degrees. In this month there are about 16 days of precipitation. From March it starts to get warmer and the temperature is around 0 and 8 degrees. In June, July and August you see that the average temperature is around 22 to 23 degrees. From September this temperature starts to drop again, to about 3 degrees in December. Keep an eye on the current weather information when you go to Germany for the weekend.

Public transport during Germany weekend away

Traveling by public transport has advantages: it is cheap and public transport takes you to your destination. There are many destinations that you can reach by train or bus. These are both cities and nature reserves.

In general, the prices in Germany are the same as in the Netherlands. The earlier you book your ticket, the lower the price. Did you know that you can use your public transport card during your Germany weekend away? The Dutch OV chip card is valid on the train route Enschede and Gronau. For the other destinations, City-ticket and City mobile are used. This allows you to easily travel to your destination by S-bahn, metro, tram or bus. As mentioned before, Germany is known for “punktlichkeit”. You can also assume that the transport will depart and arrive on time with public transport.
