Go on holiday in Groningen and experience the most beautiful northern spots

With a holiday in Groningen you don’t have to get bored. In the student city you can enjoy a collection of history and new culture in one. There are many cozy places to be found throughout the city. For example, you have the Noorderplantsoen, the City Park, the Vismarkt or the Grote Markt. In the 17th century, the Noorderplantsoen had defensive walls and canals were dug. Now it has been converted into a beautiful park with ponds. The park is laid out in an English style. Many people come here to relax or to do sports, so you will find a mixture of cultures and backgrounds in the park.

Every year in August the Noorderzon Festival of Performing Arts & Society, or Noorderzon, is organized in the park. In addition to the Noorderplantsoen, there is also the City Park. There is also plenty to do in the City Park and there is a place for everyone: whether you are a nature lover, athlete or musician. You become one with nature in the park. The NDE Nature Pavilion ‘t Groene Hart is located in the park. Here you can learn everything about the park and walk different routes.

Fun during your Groningen holiday

Discover the capital

The fish market is packed with stalls every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. In the 15th century only fish was traded here, but now you can get everything at this market. The Korenbeurs is located on the Vismarkt, where grain used to be traded. Now there is a supermarket in the building. The building is in the top 100 of the Dutch UNESCO monuments, so it is a unique place to do your shopping! In addition to the Vismarkt, you also have the Grote Markt. Just like at the fish market, there are all kinds of stalls here on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

On the Grote Markt is the Martinitoren, or as the Stadjers call it “d’Olle Grieze”. With almost 100 meters, the Martinitoren is the highest tower in Groningen and is part of the Martinikerk. It is possible to climb the Martinitoren to get a beautiful view of the beautiful city. For a delicious snack, drink or dinner you can go to Grand Café & Terrace De Drie Gezusters. The cafe is well known among the Stadjers, but perhaps even more famous among students. Is there no more room inside? No problem! The cafe has a heated terrace. With a holiday in Groningen you will certainly not be bored with all these cozy hotspots.

Into nature

National Parks & Lakes

Are you going on holiday in the province of Groningen? That shouldn’t be a problem either! There is also plenty to do in the province itself. For example, go to the Hortus botanicus in Haren. Here you will find various gardens such as a Chinese garden or a herb garden, but also an apiary. Are you a nature lover, but do you enjoy water more? Then you could go for the Paterswoldsemeer, the Zuidlaardermeer or the Lauwersmeer National Park.

At the Paterswoldsemeer and the Zuidlaardermeer you can swim, fish, sail, walk, cycle and many more fun things to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Lauwersmeer National Park is a nature reserve where you can spot various animals and which is a beautiful area for walking or cycling. These three areas are also very nice for a holiday in Groningen with a dog.

On the way during your Groningen holiday

In the north of Groningen you can also walk on mudflats. Here you walk on the mudflats at low tide. Another fun activity is to drive a route on an E-chopper through the beautiful province. The E-chopper is fully electric, which keeps it fun for everyone. For example, go along Bourtange, a town on the border with Germany. The city is a fortified city and looks like a star. You go back in time here and it is a very nice experience to see how it used to be in the village. Besides the fact that these activities are all great fun, they can also contribute to a sustainable Groningen holiday!
