The islands at a glance

Ameland

Ameland has salt and fresh water, which ensures that there is a great diversity of plant species. Did you know that there are 1400 plant species in the Netherlands? There are 500 of these different plant species on this small piece of land! In the summer Ameland is in full bloom, which gives a beautiful picture.

Texel

The largest Wadden island in the Netherlands used to have an air base, also known as the Mok Bay. Here the Dutch aviation had all its seaplanes. Due to some minor adjustments, it was also possible to land here at low tide. During the Second World War, Mok Bay was actively used as an airbase until it was destroyed by the Germans on 10 and 11 May 1940. They then used it for anti-aircraft artillery.

Vlieland

The smallest island of all, Vlieland, has the most nature! Except for 0.4 square kilometers, the entire island is a nature reserve! A great diversity of plants and animals can also be admired on Vlieland. Forest and dunes alternate beautifully, which makes for a nice holiday on the Wadden Islands.

Schiermonnikoog

The only island with its own language! About a hundred people still speak the Schierse language, which is derived from the Frisian language. It is special to mention that the island is also constantly shifting! Schiermonnikoog has moved three kilometers to the east since 1500.

Terschelling

The special thing about Terschelling is that it has almost ten different biotopes. A biotope is a type of nature, such as dunes, forest, etc. Here too, there is great biodiversity due to the nature of the island. Did you know that 1200 different butterflies and moths live on Terschelling? You can do many different activities on this island. During your holiday on the Wadden Islands, go rafting in the North Sea, an absolute must!
