Would you like to discover the pleasant south of the Netherlands?

Come spend the night in Limburg and taste the Burgundian atmosphere

In the most southern province of our country you imagine yourself in a holiday atmosphere. Limburg is therefore regularly referred to as a piece of foreign land. The landscape is a lot more hilly than the rest of the mostly flat Netherlands. Moreover, it is a few degrees warmer in summer and a few degrees colder in winter than elsewhere in the country. Discover what awaits you when you come to spend the night in Limburg.

The fact that Limburg feels like a piece of foreign land undoubtedly has to do with the location of the province. Limburg borders on both Belgium and Germany. You will certainly recognize the influences of both countries when staying overnight in South Limburg. The elongated province is occasionally only 10 kilometers wide in the south.

Limburg is popular among tourists. If you look at overnight stays at holiday parks, in 2019 the most people of all provinces spent the night in Limburg. Come camping in the hills, book a sustainable hotel in Maastricht or go for an ecolodge in Heerlen. Spending the night in Limburg offers something for everyone!

Spending the night in Limburg

The most beautiful Limburg villages cities

If you say Limburg, you also say Maastricht. As one of the southernmost cities in the Netherlands, this is a popular location for city trips. Admire the fortifications, settle on the Vrijthof and stroll along the Maas: Maastricht is a wonderful place to spend the night in Limburg.

A visit to Valkenburg cannot be missed when you are in Limburg. The city is located in the beautiful Geuldal, where it is wonderful to walk. You will not be the only tourist in Valkenburg, because there are all kinds of tourist activities and places of interest all year round. The marl caves tell the history of limestone extraction. There are also murals to see. In winter Valkenburg has its popular Christmas market, making it a romantic stay in Limburg.

Smaller, but definitely worth a visit is the village of Thorn. The white houses make it an idyllic place. Thorn used to be a principality, which gives it a rich history. Besides the white houses, the abbey church is a beautiful sight. If you are more in the north of the province, Thorn is a wonderful place to stay in Limburg.

Limburg landscape

The largest differences in height in the Netherlands can be found in Limburg. The hilly landscape in South Limburg offers beautiful views, whether you take one of the many walking routes or get on a road bike. For example, you will find the 134 meter high Cauberg: a beautiful place to spend the night in South Limburg. Or pay a visit to the Maasduinen National Park, where you can walk through the river dunes of the Maas or through the fen area.

If you want to spend the night in Limburg in a special way, then spend the night in one of the quiet areas. Here you almost only hear the sounds of nature, so you can really relax.

Near Roermond you will find the vast Maasplassen. You can take a refreshing dip in the summer and there are also many options for water sports. There are several campsites along the water, where you can stay if you want to spend the night in Limburg.

Did you know that in Limburg you will find flora and fauna that are not found in the rest of the Netherlands? For example, you can just encounter the yellow-bellied toad in the water, or see the also yellow zinc pansy growing along the side.

Sniffing culture when staying overnight in Limburg

Until 1800, Limburg mostly consisted of independent areas, so that different Limburgish dialects exist. If you want to hear that dialect, you can, for example, go to the Oud-Limburgs militia festival, or rather the ‘D’n Auwe Limburger† Every year on the first Sunday of July it is special to spend the night in Limburg. You can admire the militia with their costumes during parades and, for example, shooting competitions.

If you come to stay overnight in Limburg, you will not have noticed that the province has traditionally been Roman Catholic. Carnival is of course celebrated and there are sacramental processions on the second Sunday of Pentecost.

Limburg has its own national anthem, called ‘Waar in ‘t bronsgroen oakhout’. This song was written at the beginning of the 20th century. Remarkably enough, not in Limburgish, but in Dutch, to emphasize that the province belonged to the Netherlands and not to Belgium or Germany.

If you want to spend a romantic night in Limburg, the wine region in the south of the province is a must. You can follow various ‘Routes des vins’ there, where you can learn everything about the wines from the Limburg vineyards while walking. Enjoy Burgundy in your own country!

Spending the night in Limburg: different landscape and climate

We already said it: Limburg seems a bit foreign. This is partly due to the hilly landscape, which has an impact on the climate. In South Limburg in particular, it can easily be a few degrees warmer in summer and a few degrees colder in winter than in the rest of the Netherlands. In addition, Limburg contains both the driest area in the Netherlands – in the Meuse valley – and the wettest area in the Netherlands, near Vaals. These are only 10 kilometers apart. Spending the night in South Limburg is therefore guaranteed Burgundian enjoyment.

As you can see, this southern province has something for everyone. Finally, you certainly don’t want to miss a slice of Limburgse vlaai. You will also find plenty of vegan options at traditional Limburg bakeries. If you want to discover everything, then you should definitely stay overnight in Limburg!
