Staying overnight in Drenthe

Admire the nature of Drenthe

In Drenthe you will find no fewer than three national parks, each of which offers options for special overnight stays in Drenthe. For example, there is Dwingelderveld National Park, where you can just come across a flock of sheep. There are two herds walking around on the heathland.

On the border of Friesland and Drenthe you will find the National Park Drents-Firese Wold. This park is one of the most extensive nature reserves in the Netherlands. Forest, heath, fens and sand alternate, which makes for beautiful sights.

Drentsche Aa National Park forms around the river Aa, which is a wonderful place to cycle or walk. This nature reserve has the oldest esdorpen: villages that were built on a sand ridge in the Middle Ages. If you want to spend the night in Drenthe, you can stay in one of these unique esdorpen.

't New Heavenly

When you visit Drenthe, it is definitely worth a visit to the recreational lake ‘t Nije Hemelriek. Hidden between the woods is a lake with beautiful blue water, where you can swim in the summer. But even with less summery weather it is wonderful to cycle and walk around the lake. Nearby is the Boomkroonpad, which at sunset is the icing on the cake for a romantic overnight stay in Drenthe.

Stay overnight at the campsite in Drenthe

In the many nature reserves in Drenthe it is wonderful to camp, for example to spend the night in the forest Drenthe. An additional advantage is that it gets very dark in Drenthe at night, so that you can spot an infinite number of stars when the weather is clear. Pitch your tent, take the caravan or motorhome with you or book a cottage and sit in the middle of wonderful nature.

Special overnight stay in Drenthe

In the middle of the trees you can spend the night in the forest of Drenthe, in fully furnished tree houses. From primitive to luxurious overnight stay in Drenthe: sleeping in a tree house is a unique experience. Some tree houses are so surrounded by nature that the deer just walk under your hut. Enjoy the view or spot through your binoculars a spotted woodpecker that likes to live in Drenthe.

Dolmens

If you come to spend the night in Drenthe, a visit to the dolmens is of course a must. Spread across Drenthe are no fewer than 52 dolmens. You will find many of them in the Hondsrug , the only Unesco Global Geopark in the Netherlands.

In the Oertijdpark you travel through time and you are fed with historical facts that tell everything about the dolmens. But there is also plenty to do when you come to Drenthe with children. Think of an archery range, or a ride in an old locomotive on a narrow gauge railway.

Demographics of Drenthe

As the least populated province of the Netherlands, Drenthe is relatively quiet. While other provinces are becoming more densely populated because of the migration to large cities, the population size in Drenthe is decreasing. If you come to spend the night in Drenthe, you will undoubtedly notice the tranquility.

Drenthe places with the most inhabitants are Assen, Emmen, Hoogeveen and Meppel. With 67,000 inhabitants, Assen is the largest town in Drenthe. If you like urban coziness, these are the places to stay in Drenthe. However, it must be said that all four are not large cities and that they therefore also have fewer facilities than might be expected. Nevertheless, you can certainly find a luxurious overnight stay in Drenthe. How about a hot tub under the clear starry sky?

Drenthe, as the inhabitants of the province are called, also have their own dialect. Drenthe is a recognized regional language. A special overnight stay in Drenthe therefore includes learning a little bit of Drenthe. We’ll help you on your way: ‘girlgat’ means smiley face. Maybe you even know a little Drents without being aware of it! The band Mooi Wark comes from Drenthe and also sings in dialect.
