Austria is mainly known as a winter sports destination. Tyrol in particular is a well-known and extensive ski area where many holiday homes can be found. Thanks to the pure winter air and the beautiful surroundings, you are guaranteed to find inner peace and feel that everything gets a calmer pace. And if you are tired of the cold, you can easily take the relaxation to the local spa or thermal baths, where you can warm up with, for example, some warm mulled wine. Scattered throughout the Austrian Alps there are plenty of holiday spots where you can go. But where in Austria do you go on holiday when there is so much to choose from?! Don’t worry, there’s something for everyone! Take, for example, a holiday to the Austrian Zillertal.

Zillertal is a valley, known among the Dutch, in the east of the Tyrol region. The Zillertal has a huge network of hiking and cycling trails, mountain lifts and cosy, typically Austrian mountain huts. For families this is one of the best Austrian holiday spots. There are several play parks for the kids and there are also climbing spots, walking and cycling routes especially for children. And also if you want to go on holiday in Austria with the dog, this is and other great destinations to go to.

More nice Austrian holiday places are of course the cities! A very popular location for tourists is the medieval city of Innsbruck, which is also located in the state of Tyrol. In both summer and winter there are plenty of tourists here.

A holiday in Innsbruck, Austria, is great for culture lovers. It is filled with historic sites and fascinating architecture such as The Golden Roof and Imperial Palace. The local, covered market Markthalle is also highly recommended. Here you will find all kinds of stalls with local products. You will also find several bars and coffee shops where you can go for a drink.

Another must see cultural occasion is the Haus der Musik a.k.a. the Muziekhuis. It is an open house and meeting place, but above all a place for music and theater performances. A great holiday tip for people who want to soak up some culture.

Vienna

And of course, the destination you really should visit is Vienna. Vienna is the capital of Austria. It is the largest city and the cultural and political center of the country. Vienna has also been voted the most liveable city in the world several times.

Despite the fact that a lot of people live there is a lot of greenery and space in the city and all basic facilities are of good quality. A tip for a holiday in Austria is a visit to a traditional Viennese coffee house. And take it seriously, because drinking coffee is very special in Vienna. Recommended are the Wiener Melange and the pastry Sachertorte.

If you want to see the whole city you definitely need transport, but you can discover the old center on foot. Popular sights can all be found within walking distance of each other. These are, for example, the Hofburg with the Spanish Riding School, the museum of Sissi and the Art History Museum. Between the tips for a holiday in Austria and a visit to Vienna, you will certainly be advised to take your time for the old town, because there is a lot to see and do.

There is also a lot to experience outside the center. A little outside the city centre is Schönbrunn Palace, the city’s most important cultural heritage. Schönbrunn Palace is a palace from the 18th century and functioned as a holiday residence for Austrian emperors. You can walk around the gardens yourself or go inside with a tour where a guide can tell you everything about this special building.

Austrian cuisine

What do you think is the most famous dish in Austrian cuisine? If you had the Wiener Schnitzel in mind, you were right! The Wiener Schnitzel originated in Vienna, but is now known worldwide. Other well-known dishes are the Kaiserschmarn and the Apfelstrudel. Did you know that a strudel also has a wide variety of species? So if you don’t like apple, there are plenty of other options. 

Furthermore, Austria is also known for the cheese and sausage, but especially for the alcohol. Austria has a rich beer tradition and many breweries. For beer lovers, visiting such a brewery is certainly a good tip for a holiday in Austria. Austria also has a great wine culture. Austria can therefore be considered one of the most important producers of quality wines. 

Also, in Austria, many Schnapps or Edelbrands are served after a meal. In addition, the inhabitants of Austria also love to make the alcohol themselves. That is why there are about 20,000 private distilleries in Austria. So at all Austrian holiday spots there is somewhere a place where you can taste and buy!
